As George Bernard Shaw wrote in 1903 in Man and Superman, “When two people are under the influence of the most violent, most insane, most delusive, and most transient of passions, they are required to swear that they will remain in that excited, abnormal, and exhausting condition continuously until death do them part.” Of course, we can’t. Passion may spark love, but it isn’t love and it can’t maintain love. Friedrich Nietzsche described the true nature of lasting love: “It’s not the lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes an unhappy marriage.”
